Financial Help for Veterans
Active-duty service members and veterans qualify for protections and programs civilians don't. Knowing which to call first saves weeks.
Emergency cash assistance
Nonprofits with same-week grants for veterans:
- Operation Homefront — utilities, rent, car repair
- VFW Unmet Needs Grant — up to $1,500 for active service-connected hardship
- American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance — for veterans with dependent children
- USA Cares — emergency assistance for post-9/11 veterans
MLA: the 36% APR cap
The Military Lending Act caps APR at 36% for active-duty service members and their dependents on most consumer loans, including payday and title loans. Any lender quoting above 36% to a covered borrower is breaking federal law.
Long-term tools
VA home loans (0% down, no PMI), the GI Bill, and VA disability compensation are underused. Start at va.gov or call 1-800-827-1000.
