Financial Help for Veterans

Active-duty service members and veterans qualify for protections and programs civilians don't. Knowing which to call first saves weeks.

Emergency cash assistance

Nonprofits with same-week grants for veterans:

  • Operation Homefront — utilities, rent, car repair
  • VFW Unmet Needs Grant — up to $1,500 for active service-connected hardship
  • American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance — for veterans with dependent children
  • USA Cares — emergency assistance for post-9/11 veterans

MLA: the 36% APR cap

The Military Lending Act caps APR at 36% for active-duty service members and their dependents on most consumer loans, including payday and title loans. Any lender quoting above 36% to a covered borrower is breaking federal law.

Long-term tools
